Meet Jocelyn Chan
Jocelyn Chan is a glass artist and musician from Hong Kong.
Jocelyn is a part of our Burlington Glass team at AO Glass. Between studying at different schools in the world she works both in the hot shop production, and makes her own glass art pieces. Jocelyn is currently a student at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art. (Check out this link. It is soo cool and it is featuring women glass students.)
From Hong Kong to Wisconsin, Italy, Vermont, Virginia and now in Japan, I have been traveling everywhere for inspiration and new ideas as a glass artist. When I first came to Vermont to work in AO Glass, Tove introduced me to her maker skirts series. I fell in love once I saw how many pockets there are on a skirt. As a glassblower, blowing glass requires a lot of attention, good timing and precise thinking. In another word, I constantly work in a face-paced environment. Wearing a maker skirt while blowing glass helps me a lot on quickly shaping glass by snapping my shears, tweezers and other tools from the pockets of my skirt easily, as well as changing my clear safety glasses to didymium glasses for better view of hot glass. Not only is it well-suited for work, but it also gives of a feminine look in a male-dominated glass world.
Wandering around the world with her ability of perfect pitch, Jocelyn Chan creates installation and performance artworks using the language of sound and music. Born in 1998 and raised in Hong Kong, surrounded by the rich history of neon lights, Jocelyn was initially drawn to glass through the process of neon bending at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She found a passion in glassblowing in their hotshop, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass and Printmaking. She also creates works related to being underwater to remind herself about her time as a Hong Kong swimming representative.
As a recipient of a Takano Sano Scholarship, her recent works have been recognized by the Glass Art Society. In 2020, she was awarded a Catherine Hokin Scholarship from the University of Wisconsin - Madison Art Department. Her works have been exhibited in the Chazen Museum of Art, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and in New Glass Review 42. Jocelyn continues to create challenging works and currently exploring different opportunities when traveling around the world. Follow her at @jocelynchan_art and @jocelynchan420

During the time when I travel, wearing the Mini Maker Skirt has slowly become my habit. Although it doesn’t have that many pockets than the other maker skirts, they are enough for me to quickly put a drawing pencil or eraser in and get them out when I want to draw sketches of things that I see when traveling. On top of that, the mini maker skirt is also very stylish and can be worn in any kinds of settings and weathers. I hope that I can keep inspiring people with my art, my experience, with the maker skirts during my studies in Japan, back home in the US or Hong Kong and all around the world.
