Craft it Right. From the Start.

Cotton Plucking.jpg

How we got to here.

We started in the US in 2017. Our production company in India is among the leading producers of garments in certified organic cotton, with fair working conditions.

Together we represent ongoing efforts towards environmental and social change. As of today, we address 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the U.N.

We have our own collection, custom produce garments, and just opened an agent service for brands in the US that want to source responsibly.

Contact us at tove@tovedesign.com or fill in the form below if you’d like to know more.

A glimpse into our production process:

Fair Trade

All of the cotton used for our fabrics comes from Fairtrade-certified producers. Fairtrade means fair trade agreements and opportunities for the cotton farmer in countries with poverty to invest in activities and communities for a more sustainable future. Part of the profit from Fairtrade-certified cotton is invested, by the farmer, in different projects for social, economical and environmental development.

Cotton farming

Our organic and fair trade certified cotton is farmed by Chetna Organics in Hyderabad, Central India. Drip water irrigation is used for the least possible water waste, and the farmers receive good pay for their harvest. No one is exposed to dangerous pesticides and chemicals, and GMOs are not an option. Crop rotation insures fertile soil. Certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Fairtrade Labeling Organization (FLO).

Cotton Ginning

After the annual harvest (mid Oct-Mid November usually, depending on the rains) the cotton fibers are separated from the cottonseed. Some seed goes back to be new cotton plants, and some is pressed to gain the very lubricous cotton oil, used for cooking. The fibers are then cleaned and pressed into bales.

Spinning

The bales of cotton are transported by train from Hyderabad to Tamil Nadu, in South India, to be spun into thread. The spinning for our Maker Skirts is made at KKP Spinning Mills in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, a company that of course is also certified by both GOTS and FLO.

Dyeing

The blue and grey Maker Skirts are dyed by BKS Textiles in Palladam, Tamil Nadu, and woven by the same. Naturally, GOTS and FLO certification, all the way through.

GOTS certifications.

Our fabrics are GOTS certified with a stringent tracking method through transaction certificates issued, and verified at each stage of the production process starting from ginning till sewing and shipping.

We produce the skirts in a manufacturing facility (GOTS, Fairtrade and BSCI certified) in Bangalore that provides safe and hygienic working conditions to the workers, and pay 40-70% higher than the legal minimum wage.

Denim Production.

Denim production does need water and chemicals like any other fabric. However we use water efficient dyeing process which consumes 30% less water compare to conventional dyeing and even that water is recycled. Up to 93% of the water used is recycled and even the salt in the sledge are recycled. Mill follows ZDHC standards and no liquid is discharged from the mill.

Quality and price

Quality is crucial. Our garments last a long time and represent sustainability, a sense of  good shopping, and of helping to influence the fashion industry for the better. They cost a bit more, reflecting the actual value of producing responsible garments, from the cotton fields to your finished garment.

Our work covers quite a few SDGs since we are working directly with cotton farmers and by improving their livelihood as well as textile workers’.
